Fjölkyngi started as a vivid dream and was transformed into a song. At face value it is a song about being cursed to transform into a beast by a magical entity (the “She” is open to interpretation), but the meaning can be much deeper if one looks. For me, it’s a song about one’s spirit being given back to the wild, becoming more connected with the awesome and terrifying magic that nature has to offer. It is the merging of one’s natural animalistic tendencies with the modern civilized ones that present day has turned into a necessity. The incantation (translated to the best of my ability) “fjölkyngi æva deyja” “magick never dies” states my own personal belief on magick and humans being animals at their core no matter how much modern-day society progresses. Magick may sleep, but it never dies, much like how our more natural animalistic side may sleep in modern times but may never truly die.
